San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio is one of my most favorite places to travel because that’s where my son Branden lives! (And, it’s also a really great place in and of itself!) I recently spent about three weeks there, and loved every minute of it. I’ve decided to use this blog post to share some of my favorite things about Alamo City.

It is one of the best food cities in America!

“San Antonio is one of only two U.S. cities recognized by the U.N. Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization as a Creative City of Gastronomy. The other is Tucson, Arizona.”–USA Today

If you are going to visit San Antonio and you like food, Here are my top three restaurant recommendations:

  • Best Quality Daughter. This is hands down, my favorite restaurant in San Antonio. You’ve got to try the roasted Brussel sprouts. I guarantee they are nothing like any Brussel sprouts you’ve ever tasted before. The cashew chicken is also amazing. Honestly, it is ALL amazing–get anything you want–you can thank me later. Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention it is in a historic Victorian house–which anyone who knows me well knows that is my love language…
  • Reese Bros Barbecue. This is one of those places you wouldn’t necessarily find if you weren’t looking for it. It is off-the-beaten path, and not near much else, but totally worth the trip. They’re open limited hours–from 11am until they sell out–and they DO sell out, so you’ve gotta get there early. If you are someone who loves barbecue, you must try Reese Bros!
  • Magnolia Pancake Haus. Guy Fieri raved about this restaurant on his show, Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and he absolutely got it right–this place is incredible! Of course, you’ve got to try the pancakes–but everything is good there. This time, we tried the Apfel Pfannenkuchen and OMG it was indescribably delicious. You owe it to yourself to have one of these–please!

It is a wonderful place to explore!

I definitely have some favorite places to go when I visit San Antonio. Just know that there are tons more than this to check out if you’re planning a visit–and although I won’t talk about it in this blog post, please don’t forget to remember the Alamo! Here are my top 3 places to explore in San Antonio.

  1. San Antonio Riverwalk.

I love the riverwalk because it is beautiful and peaceful, and full of art, culture, and inspiration. If you are someone who really loves long pretty walks–you can follow this path for fifteen lovely miles! Or, you can hop on and off or loop around over one of the bridges. There are shops, restaurants, and even some live entertainment. One of these days, maybe I’ll take one of the boat rides!

2. The Pearl District.

This is such a fun place to go–especially on Saturday mornings when they often have a farmer’s market going. I especially like going to the Pearl’s food hall–and (sorry to keep mentioning food), but Chilaquil is a delicious place to stop for lunch–for some of the most flavorful tacos you’ll ever eat! There are also some great shops and museums to walk through. It’s easy to spend several hours in the Pearl District just walking and browsing. I’ve also fantasized about taking a book and a picnic blanket one day and just laying in the grass and reading for a whole afternoon.

3. The Japanese Tea Garden.

Truly one of the most beautiful places in San Antonio, here you can relax, unwind, and be inspired by art, nature, and history. I love to walk the trails and also just sit and relax by the pond and watch the fish and ducks. It is also a great place to take Loki (my grand-dog) for a walk!

And, since I mentioned my grand-dog, I’ll also say that I had a wonderful time taking some Loki-portraits. He’s such a good boy!

And so, I will leave a piece of my heart in San Antonio….until next time!

XOXO,

Joanna
